Vietnam has three networks worth considering as a tourist: Viettel, Vinaphone, and MobiFone. The rest (Vinamobile, Gmobile, MVNOs) are for locals and budget hunters — not visitors who need reliable connectivity.
This guide covers what actually matters for your trip: coverage, speed, tourist SIM prices, and which one to pick based on where you’re going.
Quick comparison: Vietnam’s top 3 mobile networks for tourists

* Tested on Speedtest.net, April 2026, Hanoi. Results may vary by location and device.
Our recommendation:
- For most tourists: Viettel
- Widest coverage, including Ha Giang, Sapa, Phong Nha, and Mekong Delta.
- Fastest in our speed test (2026)
- Most competitive tourist SIM pricing
- Generous data allowance at lowest price
- Choose Vinaphone if: you stay mostly in cities - speeds are nearly identical to Viettel, and Vinaphone plans include a local Vietnamese number on select packages. Useful if you need to register for Grab or receive OTP codes.
- Choose MobiFone if: you are on a tight budget and don't leave major cities.
I. Three Vietnam Mobile Operators at a glance

Vietnam has four major mobile operators, but for tourists, only three matter:
1. Viettel – Best overall
Viettel is Vietnam’s largest carrier with 54.2% market share — more than Vinaphone and MobiFone combined, according to Statista.
Owned by Vietnam’s Ministry of Defence, Viettel has invested heavily in rural areas where other carriers don’t reach: Ha Giang valleys, Sapa mountain roads, and rural Mekong Delta villages.
Speed test (Hanoi, April 2026): 88.40 Mbps download / 94.12 Mbps upload — fastest of the three.
Global ranking: Top 3 in Ookla’s Global Speed Score (82.56), outperforming Singtel, SK Telecom, and Telia.

2. Vinaphone (VNPT) – Best for cities + local number
Vinaphone is Vietnam’s 2nd-largest carrier with strong coverage in urban and suburban areas.
Speed test (Hanoi, April 2026): 85.48 Mbps download / 93.69 Mbps upload — nearly identical to Viettel in cities.
The key difference for tourists: Some Vinaphone eSIM plans include a local Vietnamese phone number. Choose this if you need SMS verification for Grab, Zalo, or hotel bookings.
Downside: Coverage drops faster than Viettel in mountains and remote countryside.

3. MobiFone – Budget option for city travel
MobiFone works well in cities at competitive prices. But once you leave urban areas, coverage drops significantly.
Speed test (Hanoi, April 2026): 71.06 Mbps download / 93.89 Mbps upload — download is slower than Viettel/Vinaphone, but upload is just as fast.
Best for: Budget travelers staying in major cities who don’t need rural connectivity.
⚠️ Not recommended for: Ha Giang Loop, Sapa outskirts, Phong Nha, or any rural travel.

4. Other networks (Vietnamobile, Gmobile, and MVNOs) – Niche options
Vietnamobile and Gmobile are budget carriers with limited infrastructure.
MVNOs (Wintel, iTel, Local/ASIM, VNSky) lease bandwidth from the major carriers.
They are not recommended for most tourists due to limited coverage and fewer tourist-friendly plans. You might consider them only for a very attractive promotion, but the risk of weak service isn’t worth the small cost saving.
II. Detailed Comparison
1. Coverage by region
Coverage tells you where your phone actually works, not just where the network exists on paper.
| Region | Viettel | Vinaphone | MobiFone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hanoi / HCMC / Da Nang | ✅ Strong | ✅ Strong | ✅ Strong |
| Hoi An / Nha Trang / Hue | ✅ Strong | ✅ Strong | ✅ Good |
| Ha Long Bay | ✅ Strong | ✅ Good | 🟡 Patchy on water |
| Phu Quoc island | ✅ Strong | ✅ Good | 🟡 Moderate |
| Ha Giang Loop | ✅ Best available | 🟡 Patchy in valleys | ❌ Unreliable |
| Sapa / Fansipan | ✅ Strong | 🟡 Moderate | ❌ Weak |
| Phong Nha / rural Central | ✅ Strong | 🟡 Moderate | ❌ Weak |
| Mekong Delta villages | ✅ Strong | 🟡 Patchy | ❌ Unreliable |
From the table above, Viettel maintains reliable signals almost everywhere across Vietnam.

2. Speed
We tested all three networks directly in Hanoi (April 2026) to give you real numbers — not regional averages.
| Carrier | Download | Upload | Ping |
|---|---|---|---|
| Viettel | 88.40 Mbps | 94.12 Mbps | 17ms |
| Vinaphone | 85.48 Mbps | 93.69 Mbps | 18ms |
| MobiFone | 71.06 Mbps | 93.89 Mbps | 17ms |
Both Viettel and Vinaphone are exceptionally fast — more than enough for 4K streaming, video calls, and large file uploads. The difference between them is tiny. In daily use, you won’t notice it.
Viettel edges ahead in our test, but don’t choose your Vietnam SIM/eSIM plans based on speed alone. Coverage and your travel itinerary matter far more.
3. 5G roll out
All three carriers are actively expanding 5G, but at different rates:
- Viettel 5G: Widest 5G footprint. Available in Hanoi, HCMC, Da Nang, Hai Phong, Can Tho, and expanding to provincial capitals.
- Vinaphone 5G: Strong in major cities. 4G/LTE remains standard outside urban centers.
- MobiFone 5G: Still in progress. 4G/LTE is the primary network for most users.
In practice, if you’re traveling outside major cities, your phone will automatically fall back to 4G/LTE regardless of carrier. 5G is a city feature for now.

III. Tourist eSIM Plans by network
If you would rather skip the airport SIM counter entirely, eSIM is the practical alternative – buy online, receive QR code by email in minutes, install before you fly.
| Network | Validity | Daily data | Price | Phone number | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Viettel | 7 days | 5GB/day | $10.90 | No | Wide coverage, data-only |
| Viettel | 15 days | 5GB/day | $13.90 | No | Standard trips |
| Viettel | 30 days | 5GB/day | $19.90 | No | Long stays |
| Vinaphone | 7 days | 5GB or 2GB/day | $10.90 | Yes | Short trips + local number |
| Vinaphone | 10–15 days | 5GB or 2GB/day | from $13.90 | Yes | Standard trips + number |
| Vinaphone | 30 days | 5GB or 2GB/day | $19.90 | Yes | Long stays + number |
| MobiFone | 7–30 days | 4G/5G | from $10.90 | Yes | City travel + number |
Quick pick:
- Coverage + price: choose Viettel eSIM
- Need Grab/Zalo Number: choose Vinaphone eSIM
- Budget + city only: choose MobiFone eSIM
→ Browse all Vietnam eSIM plans
Note: Physical SIMs at Viettel or Vinaphone stores are slightly cheaper, but you’ll need to show your passport and register in person (takes 10–20 minutes). eSIMs cost a little more but give you instant delivery, no paperwork, and connection before you land.
IV. How to choose the right network for your Vietnam trip
It depends on your travel style, which are described in details below:
| Your travel style | Choose |
|---|---|
| Going to Ha Giang, Sapa, Phong Nha, or rural Mekong Delta | Viettel – the only reliable option in remote areas |
| Staying in cities but need a local number (Grab, Zalo, OTP) | Vinaphone – great city coverage + phone number |
| Budget travel, only visiting Hanoi/HCMC/Da Nang | MobiFone – cheap and works fine in cities |
| Just want the safest choice without thinking | Viettel – best coverage everywhere |
V. Practical tips for using your Vietnam SIM/eSIM by network
1. Check your data balance
- Viettel: SMS “KTTK” to 191 (response in Vietnamese)
- Vinaphone: Dial *101#
- MobiFone: Dial 0905#
- Universal: Go to Settings > Cellular/Mobile Data > reset data counter when you land for accurate tracking
2. Track your data usage via carrier apps
My Viettel, My Vinaphone, My MobiFone – all available on the App Store and Google Play.
3. If signal drops in remote areas
- Switch from 5G → 4G/LTE in Settings → Cellular → Voice & Data.
- Then toggle Airplane mode off/on to force network re-registration.
If you’re on MobiFone and signal is consistently poor outside cities, this is a coverage limitation, not a phone issue. Viettel-based plans are the only reliable option in most rural regions.
VI. Conclusion
The best network depends on your itinerary and needs. But most travelers go with Viettel (for reliability) or Vinaphone (for a local number). Use the comparison above to pick the right plan for your trip — and you’ll stay connected wherever you go in Vietnam.
