Yes, no matter which phone you have, it needs to be unlocked to use an eSIM from any carrier.
Some phones are locked to a specific mobile carrier. This means you can only use eSIMs from that carrier on that phone.
If you want to use eSIMs from other carriers, especially when you travel internationally, you will need to unlock your phone.
The easiest way to check if your phone is carrier unlocked is to power down your phone, then insert a new SIM card of a different mobile carrier into the SIM tray, then power the phone back on. Next, try to make a call. If it is possible to make a call, your phone is carrier-unlocked.
If you’re unsure about your device being locked or unlocked, you can contact your cellular provider about the status of your mobile phone. If, for example, you are still paying off your phone through a mobile contract, it is likely that your phone is locked.
To check if your Samsung S20/21 is an FE model, follow these steps:
– Go to Settings > tap About phone > Check the phone model name.
If your phone is an FE version, you will see the letters “FE” here. For example, the photo below shows you: “Galaxy S21 FE 5G“.
If your phone does not support eSIM technology, don’t worry, you can still use a physical Vietnam SIM Card bought at Vietnam airport upon arrival or in the city center after arrival.
